The victims are innocent and have nothing to do with the spread of the “swine flu”, which is now known as H1N1 by the authorities.

Nevertheless, the authorities in Egypt has begone to kill the nation’s approximately 250,000 pigs.

In Alexandria 100 pigs has been slaughtered, and representatives of the government began to carry about 28,000 pigs to slaughterhouses in the Cairo district of Ard el-Liwa, according to the news agency Mena.

Earlier this week the Egyptian authorities decided to terminate the pig population because of swine flu. The decision is heavily criticized by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has repeatedly emphasized that there are no signs that pigs have transferred the virus to humans.

Saber Abdel Aziz Galal from the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture says that the government has sent people out to the slum area Manshiyat Nassir in Cairo, where about 60,000 pigs used to clean up the waste.

Galal said that the pigs to be slaughtered will be tested for the disease, and the meat will be frozen, so it later can be sold by the animals’ owners.

Agriculture Amin Abaza said that the killing will last “three weeks to a month.”

It is mostly poor Copts, a Christian minority, which owns the pigs.

In a letter to President Hosni Mubarak, animal campaigner and former actress Brigitte Bardot, strongly criticized the killings.

- Taking advantage of the global hysteria over the propagation of ‘Mexican’ flu, which has nothing to do with animals, in order to launch a campaign to exterminate pigs raised by a destitute section of the population is extremely cowardly, says Brigitte Bardot.
